Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you normally go for a trip?

There are amazing fly fishing waters within two-hours of the greater Charlotte area - namely northwest North Carolina. We have several streams we guide on, and we monitor weather, stocking schedules, and overall activity reports leading up to the trip to put you on the best water. We'll communicate to you the week-of about where to meet us the morning of the trip.

What does a normal trip look like?

We'll start by suiting up and properly fitting guests for the day with boots and waders. We'll provide about 20 minutes of instruction on land to teach the basic casts and fundamentals. After this, we'll get to the water to put your new skills to action. Breaks for snacks and drinks provided as needed, and full day trips include a lunch break.

What is included, and what do I have to provide?

Our team will fully outfit you for your time on the water, from what you'll wear (boots, waders) to the tackle you'll use (rod, reel, line, flies, etc.). We do have all anglers secure a North Carolina fishing license ahead of time, this is not included in the trip cost. For full-day trips, lunch is included.

I've never been fly fishing before! Do I need to have experience?

We love newcomers! Our job is to simplify fly fishing and make it fun for everyone. No previous experience is required, although it is always helpful to have some prior knowledge. We recommend a casting clinic from Richard Griggs at Carolina Mountain Sports beforehand.

I'd love to take a trip with my kids - is there an age requirement?

Fly fishing makes for a great family bonding experience. While kids of all ages can enjoy the sport, our trips do have instructional components in the beginning and involve at least 4 hours of fishing time. With this level of engagement, we recommend children be at least 10 years old.

Do we get to keep the fish we catch?

On our trips, we practice catch and release, using single hook artificial lures. Releasing the fish back into the stream complies with NC state regulations and maintains a quality experience for the next angler to enjoy.
